Good morning Democrats!
Can we just talk about Climate Change for a moment? One of our current senators and our previous Governor would not allow anyone to use that term when he was governor. I assume he still feels that way, which is another reason we should NEVER vote for him! (I know YOU didn’t)
And then we have our current Governor, who claimed to be the “environmental” guy! LOL! His record proves he is just another opportunistic, lying, racist! He has forgotten about Florida in his quest to be the big kahuna. I do not think he ever really cared about anything but himself. (And his re-election campaign fund)
We are seeing the effects of Climate Change in spades this year. From the giant, non-moving heat dome over the south to the drought in Hawaii that made the devastating fire, fanned by a nearby hurricane, possible.
WAKE UP PEOPLE!
We must demand action and long-term planning on the part of our elected officials and Government. See the meeting list below for ways to become more informed about how your local govt. works and ways you can help influence the discussion.
I was wondering how long it would take for the smart folks to read the 14th Amendment and see what I saw. Trump is prohibited from holding office since he violated his oath of office, having engaged in an insurrection! Pretty Simple! We should live long enough to see that happen. However, between the state and Federal indictments, I think we have a shot at seeing him jailed. Especially since his lawyers have been advised to keep him on a short leash! (Good luck with that) Should we take bets on how many hours before he oversteps?
That 14th Amendment provision should also be applied to a few sitting members of congress as well. (Fingers crossed)
I could go on about what is wrong with our politics, but I am going to stop with the negative and celebrate the Voters of Ohio who gave the Ohio State Legislature the Finger this week. Bravo!!! This was a bi-partisan Vote! Real Life issues that affect voters will bring them out to vote. Let’s make that happen in Florida with our Petition drives for ballot initiatives!
One more thing – Clarence Thomas must go!

Monday August 14
The Upper Keys League of Women Voters will host a “League and Libations” event at 6pm at the Island Grill, MM85 Oceanside. This is a non-partisan group. Ring a friend and listen to a short presentation By the Keys Domestic Abuse Shelter.
Wednesday August 16
The Upper Keys Democrats will meet at 5:30pm in the side bar of Denny’s, MM 97 in the median. We have much to discuss and our guest speaker will be Islamorada Village Councilman, Henry Rosenthal. Bring your likeminded friends and join us!
The Lower Keys League of Women Voters will meet at 5:30pm in the back room at VFW Post #3911, 2200 N. Roosevelt Blvd. Key West. Jason Smith will speak about the Circuit Court Redo.
Local Govt. Meetings this week
Monday August 14
The Village of Islamorada Planning Agency will hold a meeting at 5:30pm in the Community Center at Founders Park, 87000 Plantation Key. Apparently, the last time they met was in March and there are some BPAS (Building Permit Allocation System) issues that need to be resolved. The Islamorada Village Council will meet at 5:30pm in the Community Center at Founders Park, 87000 Overseas Hwy, Plantation key. Looks like the Village is considering building their own Sewage Treatment Plant. (Instead of piping it to Key Largo) Interesting! The City of Marathon has a scheduled Code Compliance Hearing at 2pm in City Hall, 9805 Overseas Hwy, Marathon. No details available at this writing.
The Key West Planning Board will meet at 5pm in City Hall, 1300 White St. The details are interesting if you want to keep an eye on ways the city gets more congested. (My opinion) for the details: http://keywest.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx
The Key Colony Beach City Commission will meet at 9:30am In the Key Colony Inn Banquet Room, 700 W. Ocean Dr., Key Colony Beach. This is the Hot Ticket. I find it interesting that the fourth item on the agenda is rules for citizen comments and behavior! You can ZOOM in as well. To all who read my rantings, it is going to take courage to stand against the forces who are determined to change our country. We need the involvement of everyone who wants to help. I will never make you do something you are not comfortable doing, many things can be done from home. But we need all hands-on deck in this next election cycle. I want my grandchildren and great grandchildren to have the same rights and opportunities that I had.
