Monroe County DEC Calls for End to Filibuster and Passage of Women's Health Protection Act

On Saturday, May 7, 2022, the Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee met to pass the following resolution in response to the threat on women's rights in light of the latest Supreme Court's draft opinion on Roe v. Wade. The full test of the resolution is as follows:

RESOLUTION CALLING FOR AN END TO THE SENATE FILIBUSTER AND PASSAGE OF SB 1975, ALSO KNOWN AS THE WOMEN’S HEALTH PROTECTION ACT

WHEREAS, The Democratic majority in the United States senate has been unable to pass meaningful legislation for the past two years due to the onerous standard created by the filibuster and;

WHEREAS, the country voted in record numbers to have the Democratic agenda enacted and yet all governing has been stalled by an arcane procedural rule that works in the interest of a small powerful elite and not in the interests of the people and;

WHEREAS, the filibuster is the main barrier to passing SB 1975, The Women’s Health Protection Act and;

WHEREAS, the recent revelation of the intentions of a group of activist justices in the Supreme Court to undo established precedent in women’s access to reproductive healthcare and rights to privacy have created the need for federal action and;

WHEREAS, SB 1975, The Women’s Health Protection Act, among other things, federally codifies a woman’s right to an abortion and the US House of Representatives has already passed their version of this legislation on September, 24, 2021. All that is left is for the Senate to act and the President to sign it into law.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee of Monroe County, FL as follows:

Section 1: The Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee urges the Democratic Senate Majority to end the legislative filibuster and pass SB 1975, The Women’s Health Protection Act

Section 2: The Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee is authorized to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to President Joseph R. Biden, Vice President Kamala D. Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
