The Keys Dems are excited to bring you two fabulous events as part of Art & Orchids: the Online Auction and the Virtual Gala! Your support in bidding on and possibly purchasing these stunning artists’ views of the Florida Keys will enable us to work until election day – getting out the vote from each and every eligible Monroe County resident.

Online Auction

Thursday, Oct. 1, 9am – Wednesday, Oct. 14, 12pm

This “silent” auction offers nearly 50 works of art and includes a variety of paintings and sculptures from generous and blue-leaning Keys artists or donors. We’ve partnered with 32 Auctions to make it easy for you to bid and get a new piece of art for your home. It’s free to look, but you must sign-up to bid.

Virtual Gala

Friday, Oct. 16, 6pm

A live, zoom auction hosted by comedienne Stephanie Kaple with guest speakers along with musicians Brian Roberts and John Bartus. Auction offerings include a limited number of paintings and unique driftwood orchid arrangements. Prepare the signature cocktail and join us at 6:00 PM on Friday, October 16 to happy hour toasts with up to 100 kindred, blue spirits!

A suggested donation of $20 will secure your seat – limited to the first 100 guests.

    1 oz blue curacao
    Finish with a splash of champagne and add sugar to the rim of a chilled martini glass.

Ann Lorraine was raised in Kennett, Missouri. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Memphis Academy of Art. After layout art jobs in Washington, DC, and Miami, Florida, she painted and taught art in Taiwan, Laos & Thailand, where she lived for five years with her son & late husband Bill Meek.

After moving to Key West, she was art director for Key West Aloe for 8 years. She was a display manager, window, and float designer for Fast Buck Freddie’s from 1989 until 2012. Ann was married to writer – sculptor – musician Bill Lorraine for the past 27 years. She has two illustrated books.

“Longevity” by Kathryn Mapes Turner

The artwork of Kathryn Mapes Turner has unfolded from the mountain valley of Jackson Hole, Wyoming – the premier art and cultural destination of the Rocky Mountain West. Here she was born as the fourth generation to be raised on the Triangle X Ranch in Grand Teton National Park where she was inspired by the landscape’s dramatic light and natural composition.

Turner is nationally recognized with top honors from the American Impressionist Society and the National Academy of Equine Art and the Southeast Wildlife Exposition as the 2017 Featured Artist, as well as the featured artist for the 35th Annual Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. Her work has been showcased in the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Charlie Russell Museum, the Buffalo Bill Cody Center of the West, The Phippen Museum, the Brinton Museum, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, and the Booth Museum in Atlanta.

The paintings of Turner are highly sought after and collected across the country. “Atmospheric Conditions: 6-15-20 8:09pm” by Lynne Bentley-Kemp

Dr. Lynne-Bentley Kemp is an American fine arts photographer, photography educator and researcher. She holds a Ph. D. from Florida Atlantic University where she was in the inaugural class that studied the effects that photography has on culture. As a fine arts photographer, she conducts technical and aesthetic research in infrared, non-silver and digital techniques. Lynne is currently a professor of photography at Florida Keys Community College and exhibits her work at the Lucky Street Gallery. These photos are part of a sunrise and sunset series she has worked on for six years, taken with her iPhone, and sometimes from her paddleboard. “The Colors of the Keys” by Julie Joyce

Julie Joyce’s watercolors can be found in galleries throughout the Florida Keys as well as Long Island, NY reflecting her good fortune to spend summers in New York and the remainder of the year in Marathon. Her 35-year career as a flight attendant with TWA, traveling the world, helped her to “tuck my experiences into a kaleidoscope of treasured memories and images.” In January 2020 Julie was featured in “An Artist’s Journey” show at the Marathon Community Theater, where 60 pieces of her work were on exhibition. She is “pulled” into the world of luscious, bright, transparent watercolors as well as into the art of collage.” Julie studied under Connie Hauk, her mentor, and teacher, for 14 years and now can be found teaching other watercolorists herself around the Middle Keys. As she describes her art, “I feel an excitement each time I begin a painting as I try to capture the tropical essence…as the paints mix and mingle.”

Host Stephanie Kaple

Stephanie Kaple first tried stand-up with Comedy Key West in 2016 and has been making crowds throughout the Keys and South Florida laugh ever since. She was First Runner-Up in the Florida Funniest Female Contest 2019 and also has opened for comedian Howie Mandel at the Key West Theater. When not doing comedy, Stephanie is the Executive Director of the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition and also serves on several local boards. She can often be found on Key West streets walking her dog…in her high heels.

Musician Brian Roberts

Singer/ songwriter Brian Roberts has been performing in the Florida Keys since 1991. His acoustic sound can be heard at many local venues including Sloppy Joe’s Bar where he is celebrating his 20th anniversary year. Brian writes and produces original music – his latest single “Angels of Mercy” can be heard on FM radio stations throughout the Keys. Musician John Bartus

Musician, singer/songwriter, guitarist, producer, radio host, writer, publisher, mayor – John Bartus has had a number of unique careers since getting off the road in Marathon in 1984. But, his “day job” is one that he still pursues at night…with a guitar. In addition to music, John founded the Weekly Newspapers and currently publishes Marathon Magazine. He is one of the founders of the City of Marathon and is a City Council member who previously served three terms as mayor. This popular Keys musician is also the president of the Rotary Club and the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce and is a mentor for Take Stock in Children. John continues to write and record his own songs and perform locally. He will release a new CD this year – After the Storm. Find him at johnbartus.com or on Facebook.
